Sundari Gardens is located in Kalapana which is near the town of Pahoa. We’re about a 35 minute drive from Hilo. We’re only a few minutes drive to an old lava flow where you can walk out to the ocean. The “Red Road” is just minutes away, On this very scenic road you can reach Kehena beach which is a clothing optional beach 8-minutes away. Further up the road you can find stunning ocean cliffs and warm ponds.
This area of Puna is known for it’s diverse and somewhat eccentric population. You’ll find all kinds of people here! There are many intentional communities and centers in the area. It’s a pretty lively place where you can find ecstatic dances, yoga classes, permaculture courses, relational workshops, drum circles and more every day. On Saturdays there is a friendly farmers market right down the road.
For shopping, we are 20 mins from Pahoa town which has a natural food store, a regular grocery store, an Ace, a few clothing stores, and a few restaurants. We are 45 mins from Hilo which has more of all of this, and we are 2 hours from Kona which has even more, but shopping options are definitely limited compared to the mainland. Somethings won’t ship to Hawaii. The Hilo downtown is a fun place to visit with funky local shops, some good restaurants and a daily farmers market for fresh fruit, vegetables and handicrafts. There is a grocery store, health food store and a number of restaurants in our little town of Pahoa about a ten minute drive.
