Our Divine Feminine Guide for this month is…
IXCHEL
Mayan Jaguar Goddess of the moon, love, gestation, midwifery, childbirth, medicine, healing, sexuality, as well as arts and textiles.
Her name, Ixchel, means ‘Rainbow Woman’.
She’s also known as Chak Chel meaning ‘Big Rainbow’
She’s also known as Chak Chel meaning ‘Big Rainbow’
She is consider a Triple Goddess for the Maya – Maiden, Mother and Crone.
In some paintings, Ixchel is seen as a beautiful young maiden accompanied by a rabbit (who has his own place in Mayan mythology and also represents the moon).
In other images, she is a woman weaving on a waist loom that represents the thread of life — it symbolizes the umbilical cord and the placenta.
She is also portrayed as a fierce older woman emptying a jug of water onto the earth, resulting in storms and floods to destroy and cleanse the land, ready for its rebirth. This connected Ixchel with the cycle of life and death, as well as sexuality and the serpent.

She wears an entwined serpent as a headdress, with crossed bones on her skirt and carries an inverted water vessel in her hands, which represents her connection to the nourishing aspects of the water.
She gave birth to 13 children, including ‘Ek Chuah’, the God of cacao, making Ixchel the Mother Goddess of this sacred plant.
As the goddess of fertility and childbirth, the Maya believe that Ixchel is responsible for the formation of the baby in the womb and decides whether the child will be male or female. To ensure a successful birth, Maya midwives place Ixchel’s image under the birthing bed.
Ixchel’s Temple is located on a high cliff on the island of Isla Mujeres, where you can see the sun rising as well beautiful rainbows.
